NEC to develop mobile multimedia i-mode
JAPAN -- Telefonica Moviles Espana (TME) and NEC Corp.,
via its subsidiary NEC Iberica, have entered into an
agreement for the supplying mobile multimedia platform
system to develop i-mode services. Telefonica Moviles
Espana is a leading mobile telephony company in Spain,
with over 18.5 million subscribers. It provides mobile
services over GSM/GPRS, and plans to provide i-mode
service from the first half of 2003.
The
platform, developed by NEC, is supplied off-the-shelf
to Telefonica Moviles Espana. It is composed of a set
of gateway systems that enable Telefonica Moviles' customers
to gain access to i-mode services on GPRS, and mail-servers
that enables the customers to enjoy MMS.
NEC
won a contract to provide mobile multimedia platform
system and handsets from KG Telecom, the Taiwan-based
mobile operator. It provided mobile contents in order
to make i-mode service more attractive when the latter
started the service. It has also won a contract to supply
the mobile multimedia platform system from French mobile
operator, Bouygues Telecom. NEC is to provide attractive
mobile Internet services for both 2.5G and 3G mobile
Internet services and to expand mobile multimedia platform
business, targeting European and the other areas of
mobile operators in the world who wish to gain stronger
customers' satisfaction and to increase revenue.
