Siemens, Juniper supply broadband
solution to FastWeb
GERMANY
-- FastWeb, Italy's leading alternative broadband company,
recently awarded Siemens Information and Communication
Networks (ICN) a contract to extend its broadband network.
Siemens ICN will supply its multicast capable multiservice
platform, the SURPASS hiX 5300, and the E-series routers
from Juniper Networks for video services over xDSL.
FastWeb
is a pioneer in the implementation of breakthrough technological
solutions over fiber optics and xDSL. Thanks to its
all-IP network, FastWeb offers integrated voice, fast
Internet and TV over a single connection. Siemens contributed
to the successful enrichment of FastWeb's TV over DSL,
by deploying its new equipment consisting of the Surpass
hiX 5300 high-density DSLAMs and Juniper's ERX-1440
platforms. FastWeb offers its residential subscribers
a series of value-added services, including TV over
its broadband network.
The
combination of IP technology and FastWeb's bandwidth
have allowed residential customers, both with a fiber
optic and a DSL connection, to receive traditional broadcast
TV, multicast (pay TV and pay-per-view) and unicast
services (video-on-demand and interactive TV) over FastWeb's
network. FastWeb's TV was recently enhanced by the very
popular pay-TV soccer channels broadcasting Italian
Serie-A and Serie-B football league matches that have
proved to be a driver in attracting new customers.
To
date, FastWeb has deployed the Siemens solution and
Juniper's ERX-1440 platforms in Rome, Milan, Bologna,
Modena, Venice, Bari, Naples, Genoa, Padua and Turin.
The E-series platform further enhances FastWeb's offering
to its xDSL subscribers who, thanks to FastWeb's technological
expertise, receive fast Internet access, video on demand
and VoIP using the same DSL connection. Rapid uptake
of video services and growth in FastWeb's xDSL customer
base has triggered further development in these cities.
To
guarantee high-quality MPEG-2 data transfer necessary
for IP TV service, FastWeb provisions its subscribers
with connection speeds of up to 6Mbps. Guido Garrone,
FastWeb's CTO, said, "Siemens and Juniper have
provided us with an innovative revenue generating solution,
as a result we have experienced a further increase in
our subscriber base."
