TACO, MobiApps JV provides end-to-end fleet management

New Delhi -- TACO, India's growing auto component company, and MobiApps(tm), the leading provider of satellite and terrestrial communication-based logistics and telematics technologies, announced the launch of a joint venture company, TACO MobiApps Telematics Ltd. (TMT) recently.

TMT will commence operations by developing and retailing "trako" vehicle tracking systems (VTS) and logistics solutions based on global positioning system (GPS) using GSM and CDMA-based communication to the OEM and retail markets. The Company will focus on exponentially enlarging the number of commercial vehicles equipped with VTS, and projects to have 250,000 units deployed by 2008. TMT will install and maintain the necessary hardware, software, web and mobile phone services to allow customers to manage their fleets and mobile assets - track, trace, talk - through real-time visibility and control.

VTS enhance operational efficiencies of logistics by tracking the location and status of the vehicles and consignments; gather information including unscheduled stops, off-route movement, over speeding and technical data including fuel level and battery charging voltage, and relay such information back to the base camp. The base camp can access this data through various means - live on their computer screens via internet, as SMS on their mobile phones, by phone-calling a data centre, or by receiving periodic paper reports.

DS Gupta, MD, TACO, said: "Electronics, and vehicle telematics, in particular, is a growth area in the automotive industry and the launch of TMT marks TACO's entry into this area. Leveraging the strengths of India and our partner, MobiApps, we intend to build TMT to be a global operator, with leadership position in India."

Sanjay Chakrabarty, chief executive officer, MobiApps Holdings, added: "This joint venture continues our growth strategy of being the leader in vehicle telematics. The venture will build on TATA AutoComp's expertise in delivering global automotive OEMs, and MobiApps' focussed competencies in wireless and satellite communications. TMT will be able to provide end-to-end solutions to customers through applications developed in our global technology centers."

Praveen Gupta, chief executive officer, TMT stated: "Our market research indicates a high potential for improvement of fleet efficiencies through the use of VTS. TMT's parents have the necessary technology, automotive domain experience and resources to address this need. Our challenge is to enable even small fleets to exploit these advanced technologies and vastly improve their short term cash flows."
