Hutch, Intel to develop smartphone applications

BANGALORE -- Intel, the world's largest chip maker, and Hutch, India's leading cellular service provider, will jointly work on the development of smartphone applications in India.

Hutch and Intel will work to develop applications for the low-power, space-sensitive cellular phone and PDA segments. Based on Intel XScale technology, the PXA26x processor family delivers high performance and low power, while providing processing capabilities that allow wireless handsets to respond quickly to performance-intensive applications like MPEG-4 video decode, speech and handwriting recognition, Java interpretation, application performance levels, physical space-savings and new usage models.

Harit Nagpal, chief marketing officer, Hutch, said: 'Today's consumers are looking at smartphones to provide a unique experience that can't be achieved by traditional mobile phones. We are excited to collaborate with key international technology partners like Intel to develop applications for smartphones that will benefit everyone from today's busy executives to youth who enjoy playing games. For example, our partnership with Microsoft resulted in the ActiveSync facility that allows users to view, edit and send documents in the MS Word, PS PowerPoint or MS Excel formats, on their smartphones. We are happy to be working with Intel for application development."

Jayant Murty, director, marketing, South Asia Intel Technology (I) Pvt. Ltd., added: "With the convergence of computing and communications, devices like these smartphones, based on Intel's Xscale technology, provide numerous opportunities for new and exciting applications. The PXA26x processor family delivers high performance and low power, while providing processing capabilities that allow smart phones to respond quickly to performance-intensive applications like Windows media player, speech and handwriting recognition, and e-mail. The Intel PXA26x processor family continues the promise of delivering leadership building blocks based on the Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture for the wireless handheld market segment."
