Citynet deploys Infinera DTNs for next-gen optical backboner
BANGALORE -- Infinera Corp. recently announced that Citynet, a leading wholesale IXC carrier with an extensive 8,000 route mile network footprint that serves the domestic Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern markets, has deployed its DTN platform on a significant portion of its network after completing an intense lab and field trial of its hardware, software and EMS components. Citynet offers an array of bandwidth solutions that provide many of the nation’s leading wireless and wireline voice, data, and Internet carriers with highly reliable bandwidth solutions into the company’s Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets as well as regional Tier-1 markets.
Citynet selected Infinera because of significant strategic advantages offered by Infinera’s digital optical networking technology. These include, delivery of high-bandwidth optical services more quickly and flexibly than the competition, capability to offer new services such as 10GbE as well as improved network reliability and service manageability. Incorporating Infinera’s photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology, the Infinera DTNs provide the industry’s most-advanced DWDM and digital bandwidth management capabilities and support the increased demand Citynet is seeing for optical wavelength, private line and IP-based service offerings.
Infinera’s product architecture is unique in the industry because of its use of large-scale photonic integrated circuits. Infinera’s PICs convert all optical traffic at a given location into electronic signals, which can then be digitally processed. This digital bandwidth management capability is the essence of the digital optical networking concept, which results in simpler planning, engineering, and operations; faster service delivery; and a more reliable and flexible network.
Mike Friloux, COO, Citynet Wholesale, said: "Network reliability is the cornerstone of our wholesale services, and we recognise that our clients entrust their brand equity to Citynet. For that reason, 99.99 percent carrier-class reliability is our number-one priority. Infinera’s platform proved to be more than capable of meeting our stringent requirements. We see Infinera’s photonic integrated circuits as the most innovative technology in optical networking since WDM emerged in the mid-90s. Infinera’s DTN allows us to drop any amount of core bandwidth at any location on our network, bypassing the restrictive features of legacy analog-based DWDM systems. This translates into more bandwidth options for our customers while maximizing the returns of our growth capital. The strategic value for us is a highly adaptive infrastructure that allows us to shape, groom, and distribute our bandwidth based on the changing demands of our customers. Harnessing this flexibility required us to embrace the reality that electronics are and will remain the dominant force for providing intelligence in the network. This is where Infinera’s digital optical networking approach matched the reality of our day-to-day challenges."
The Infinera DTN combines DWDM, digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-based network intelligence. The DTN supports 800Gbps of DWDM capacity and delivers a variety of manageable and protectable SONET/SDH and Ethernet-based services, including 10GbE LAN PHY. The DTN runs Infinera’s IQ network operating system, which makes its digital bandwidth management possible, provides a rich set of performance monitoring capabilities, and supports automated network discovery, configuration, and provisioning via GMPLS.
