Cellular tower study debunks radiation myth
December 21, 2010
The first of its kind study, specific to the Indian environment carried out independently by the Premier Engineering Institutes revealed that “Levels of Radiation” from cellular base stations in Delhi fall hundreds of times below international safety standards. The independent study was commissioned by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) as a proactive measure stemming from the concern for the public health and safety issues.
Leading experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai (IITM), Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai (TCE) and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, Chennai (CEWIT), while carrying out measurements on the electromagnetic radiation at over 180 locations in New Delhi found that in all circumstances, the “Cumulative Measurements” were well below the compliance limit set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), adopted by the Government for the Telecom sector in India, bringing it at par with the International safety standards.
While adopting international standards on public health and safety in 2008, companies in India must by law adhere to prescribed limits for Base Station Antennae for general public exposure.
The study measured cumulative emissions within the 800 to 2000MHZ band of frequency (which includes both GSM and CDMA technologies) across in the nation’s capital using carefully calibrated equipment, as per the Dot prescribed procedure in line with the ICNIRP specifications.
Prof. P.R.Goundan, Joint Director Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, Chennai, stated that: “It is one of the first studies carried out in the Indian environment to assess the level of emissions from the Mobile Towers. We are happy to note that the cumulative emissions are much below the prescribed limits and that the service providers in India are complying with the safety norms. Prof. Dr.S.Raju, Head of Department ECE Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai a leading scientist , awarded recently by the Tamilnadu State Government further stated that “ Any hazard to the public health is a larger societal concern. It is important that statements concerning public and health & safety should be well supported with facts and scientific evidence. The study brings out very clearly that even in the worst case scenario the cumulative emission levels were far below the INCNIRP standards.”
The study was commissioned in tandem by COAI and AUSPI, whose related aims include sustaining a world-class cellular infrastructure in India, the new finding come as a response to growing public concern over myths associated with the emissions from the cellular mobile towers and its alleged health effects on the human body.

TRAI might impose penalties on calls from telemarketing firm’s and operators
November 30, 2010
In an interesting move, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is expected to levy heavy penalty on telemarketing firms and operators that disturbs the customer with unwanted calls. This move has come as a great relief for subscribers who had to bear the nuisance of these firms by means of their calls and messages.
In addition, the telemarketing firms would also be allotted a separate series of number beginning with '700' to distinguish these callers from others and thereby allowing subscribers to decide whether to attend the call al all.
Mobile Number Portability in India
November 25, 2010
In yet another milestone achieved by the Telecom Industry – Mobile Number Portability launch being announced from Haryana Licensed Service Area on November 25, 2010.
COAI and the GSM industry warmly welcomes the implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India. It began with the DoT’s initiative of MNP project on April 17, 2009 by granting Licenses to two M N P operators Syniverse Technologies India and M N P Interconnection Telecom Solutions India. COAI worked very closely with DoT, TEC and all operators to ensure smooth and early accomplishment of MNP.
Mr. Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman COAI congratulated the Ministry and lauded the efforts of the industry on the successful launch of MNP, and stated that “Inspite of the complex Indian Telecom Market, the M N P has been successfully implemented by the unified effort of the, Ministry of Communication, TRAI and the Telecom Industry.”
M N P will provide unprecedented freedom of choice, maximize customer satisfaction and allow service providers to showcase their brand value. From a user’s perspective, mobile number portability creates an ability to switch mobile network without the possible cost and inconvenience of a change of their telephone number. It also creates for mobile users the benefit of something akin to a personal number. This would remove the last major obstacle to the freedom of choice by consumers and would promote fair and effective competition in the market.

COAI expands membership base in recognition of Convergence in the Telecom Industry
December 6, 2010
Established in 1995 as the key industry representation body for mobile telecommunications, COAI has further expanded its membership base by accepting some of the world’s leading telecom giants as members of COAI.
Major Industry Players CISCO India, Huawei Technologies, Qualcomm, RIM and Alcatel Lucent have joined as Associate Members.
With the advent of 3G and Broadband services and the promise of 4G, LTE and other technologies and services on the horizon, COAI is keenly aware that the eco-system required to sustain world class mobile services depends increasingly on an ever widening circle of players drawn from industries hitherto unrelated to telecommunications. The National interest of promoting manufacturing in India (of handsets and telecommunications equipment) is vitally dependent on increasing the nation’s store of IP capital.
This in turn requires close cooperation with our leading academic institutions. The need for customer driven content, especially over the web, requires our network service providers to establish relationships with the news media, entertainment sources, gaming, VAS providers and other IT oriented companies. The convergence of our network platforms around data requires new relationships with network hardware and software vendors.
All of this will also lead to fresh requirements around the policy and regulatory frameworks presently in place. With these imperatives in mind, COAI, through its members, is committed to leading the way forward.
