Reliance Jio may redial Cisco to foray into 500 billion enterprise market

Reliance Jio may redial Cisco to foray into 500 billion enterprise marketJio’s arch rival Bharti Airtel, as of quarter ending June 2018, has more than 4.55 lakh enterprise customers that contributes close to 15% of its total revenue while state-run BSNL, that mostly serves public sector companies, garners 25% revenue from enterprise business. Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) and the US-based Cisco Systems are likely to extend their partnership to tap the ₹50,000-crore strong enterprise market with a services portfolio which the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco plans to commercially launch shortly.

“As they (Jio) make enterprise move, Cisco would start working with them closely for the intuitive network, collaboration, cloud and security,” an industry source told ET Telecom. In 2012, India’s new telecom entrant and the California-based networking major entered into a strategic alliance across multiple technology areas including deployment of voice over long-term evolution (VoLTE) -- a fourth-generation (4G) technology-based networks -- for its consumer business.

Jio, according to the source, would be using the company’s key technologies to deliver network-based services that Jio would aim to offer to large companies. With telcos’ consumer business likely to become stable only by the end of 2018, following the merger between Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, Jio is now preparing to tap the ₹50,000-crore strong enterprise market pie dominated by Bharti Airtel and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Reliance Jio didn’t respond to ET’s emailed queries till the time of going to press. Jio’s arch rival Bharti Airtel, as of quarter ending June 2018, has more than 4.55 lakh enterprise customers that contributes close to 15% of its total revenue while state-run BSNL, that mostly serves public sector companies, garners 25% revenue from enterprise business which it plans to further grow.

The telco has created a complete greenfield Internet Protocol or IP-backed network based on VoLTE technology, and its partnership with Cisco includes IP/MPLS, data centre, integrated mobile core, service provider Wi-Fi, contact center, security, and enterprise IT.

The industry source said that since digital services are being delivered through telecom networks created by operators, the role of mobile carriers have become central to the entire digital play across sectors. The telecom arm of the oil-to-retail conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is aggressively rolling out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) wireline offering JioGigaFiber, particularly in commercial establishments across India’s top cities.

“They have not launched enterprise solution yet which is few quarters away. Go-to-market talks are underway, and they (Jio) are looking at what extra services can be delivered,” the person familiar with the matter added. In order to gain first-hand business experience, Jio has already deployed Cisco’s enterprise solutions in its Mumbai’s headquarters premise that houses 5,000 employees. These include Cybersecurity solution and WebEx collaboration tool in addition to routers and switches.(Source: ET Telecom)

The Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has announced a new offer for its postpaid customers. Under this new deal, Airtel offers a total discount of Rs 50 for its users on its Rs 399 myPlan Infinity postpaid recharge. The said discount will be provided to the customers in form of Rs 50 vouchers over the next six months taking the total value to Rs 300. This will also bring down the effective price of Rs 399 plan down to Rs 349. With the introduction of this offer for postpaid users, Airtel will now be able to challenge Vodafone’s RED range of postpaid plans. Vodafone’s RED range of postpaid plans starts at a price of Rs 299.

Under this plan, Airtel users get 20GB data per month with ‘carry forward’ policy for both 3G and 4G SIMs. However, Airtel is offering an additional 20 GB data for the next 12 months taking the monthly data benefits to 40GB. This similar to what Vodafone offers to its user with its RED Rs 399 postpaid plan. Apart from this, the Airtel customer also enjoy other benefits like 100 outgoing text messages or SMS and free voice calls. The customers also receive a benefit of free subscriptions to Airtel TV and Wynk Music for a period of three months.

The move comes after Bharti Airtel was dethroned from its top position in the telecom industry with the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The merger has given rise to India’s largest telecom operator- Vodafone India Limited. It also surpassed Bharti Airtel with a total revenues of over Rs 80,000 crore, 400 million customers, 35 per cent subscriber market share and 41 per cent revenue market share.

According to a data released by Telecom Regulatory Association of India (TRAI), the Bharti Airtel remained the market leader in the month of June, with a total user count of 344.56 million, followed by Vodafone’s 222.73 million, Idea’s 220.60 million and Jio’s 215.26 million. (Source: FE Online)

China Unicom & China Telecom Potential Merger Reports Oita Sumitomo Corporate

China Unicom & China Telecom Potential Merger Reports Oita Sumitomo CorporateOita Sumitomo Corporate analysts have suggested that China is considering the option of combining the nation's two wireless carriers. This is because of the urge to develop 5G Internet and takeover the US to dominate mobile technology. A proposal review is ongoing to look at the possibilities of combining these companies but an agreement is yet to be reached on the matter.

However, the importance of 5G technology cannot be overemphasized, as it has the power to effect a positive revolution on how we use everything ranging from household appliances to cars. "The most important task to China right now is the achievement of success in 5G and merger is the perfect strategy" said Matthew Andrews, Head of Corporate Trading at Oita Sumitomo Corporate.

As several speculations were being made by the Chinese media, on the possibilities of combining these companies, executives at Unicom and China Telecom have debunked this at their recent earnings briefing last month. The two companies made it clear that they were not aware of the merger. Even the state owned asset supervision and administration commission together with the ministry of industry and information technology has refused to make a statement on this.

There have been several reasons that have made China government to consider a merger between the two carriers for years. One of which is the escalating tension between China and the US. "A major effect of this on China, is that the Chinese government would have to sacrifice the advantages of local competition over the speed of 5G adoption by reducing its phone operators to two whereas most markets in the world have three to four." Added Callum Price, Senior Vice President at Oita Sumitomo Corporate.

The Qualcomm Broadcomm deal, which the US opposed would have left a big opportunity for the Chinese government to expand its 5G standard setting process. According to several reports Oita Sumitomo Corporate research analysts commented saying that China holds a narrow lead over the US and South Korea in its readiness in 5G revolution. This is as a result of President XI Jinping's "Made In China" 2025 agenda to make the country a leader in a range of high tech industries, which has led proactive government policies and industry momentum.
