Telstra uses Nortel solutions to upgrade

HONG KONG -- Telstra will use solutions from Nortel Networks to upgrade its CDMA wireless network with 3G CDMA2000 1x digital wireless technology, in selected centres around Australia.

Telstra will deploy Nortel Univity solutions to enable CDMA2000 1x radio access with a simple card upgrade to Telstra's existing metro cell base station equipment. It will also deliver a new packet-based core infrastructure. The upgrades will position Telstra to offer 3G services and improve spectral efficiency while driving down Telstra's costs of delivering traffic across their network.

Telstra's CDMA2000 1x rollout has been completed in greater Sydney, greater Melbourne and Victoria's regional Gippsland centre of Sale, east of Melbourne, and upgrades are now underway in Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Products to be deployed for Telstra from Nortel Networks Univity CDMA2000 product portfolio include the Univity CDMA metro cell radio base station, Univity CDMA base station controllers and Univity CDMA PDSN, based on Nortel Networks Shasta platform.
