Sun, China Unicom to bring mobile Java services
HONGKONG
-- Sun Microsystems has announced a partnership with
China Unicom to build an end-to-end Java enabled wireless
data infrastructure. Based on Sun platform, this effort
will deliver enhanced data services for China Unicom's
sixty million mobile subscribers. Sun will provide products
and consulting services to enable China Unicom to market
data services on Java 2 platform, micro edition (J2ME).
Offering
advanced and innovative data capabilities will help
China Unicom to remain competitive, as China's mobile
consumers demand more sophisticated wireless services.
The new class of data applications creates an opportunity
for local Java developers to leverage the solutions
they create, for China and other countries.
With
over 50 million devices deployed, Java is market-leading
platform for advanced wireless data services, with more
carrier deployments, handsets, and content than any
other competing technology. Java enabled handsets are
currently running on all major wireless network systems
globally, including GSM, GPRS, PDC, and CDMA. Java enabled
wireless data services is already a proven success in
the Asia-Pacific market, with the top carriers in each
market committed to providing Java applications and
services.
The
first Java technology-based applications is expected
to be available to China Unicom subscribers by the first
quarter of 2003.
