Tata Indicom launches PTT services in Delhi

NEW DELHI -- In a major initiative, the first of its kind for a mobile service provider in India, Tata Indicom recently announced the commercial launch of push-to-talk (PTT) services in New Delhi. With this, Tata Teleservices became the first cellular service provider to launch PTT across India. Inaugurating the service, Amit Bose, president, Telecom, Tata Teleservices, made a PTT call to Dr. Naresh Malhan, chief operating officer (COO), Tata Teleservices' New Delhi circle.

The PTT service will allow customers to connect directly, in seconds, with other Tata Indicom PTT users by simply pressing a button on their PTT-capable handsets. Targeted at corporates, small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) and consumers, the service will be available on the Kyocera KX 440 handset with a host of additional features, such as Brew chat applications, group talk, etc.

As an introductory offer, for postpaid customers, PTT handsets are priced at Rs. 5000. Users can make unlimited calls by paying a flat monthly rental of Rs. 99. Tata Teleservices is also offering an EMI scheme for corporates, where a corporate customer can buy a PTT handset by making a down payment of Rs. 1,000. The corporate customer will have to pay an EMI of Rs. 350 for 12 months. Besides these offers, Tata Teleservices will shortly introduce bulk discount scheme for corporates.

The PTT service is built on Qualcomm's BREWChat technology, which enables person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-group (P2G) communication between users at the 'push of a button'. This feature provides fast connection to individuals or even groups of people. The service has been specially designed for cdma2000/1x networks and will go live, for the first time ever in the world on the Tata Indicom network.

The BREWChat solution offers Tata Teleservices superior call set-up performance, bandwidth savings and is designed to seamlessly upgrade to and interoperate with the BREWChat technology, which operates on cdma2000/1x Release A networks, and provides even faster performance capabilities.

Amit Bose said: "We are happy to introduce PTT across the country. As Delhi has the largest mobile subscriber base in India, we are confident and optimistic that PTT services will get a tremendous response in the North. We believe that PTT is an important step in India's mobile telephony industry. The customer now has a unique service that provides instant connectivity and significant cost benefits. We are confident that our esteemed customers will receive an unmatched wireless experience and the service will be immensely popular among corporates and the masses."
