China Netcom selects Nortel for next-generation optical
backbone
BEIJING
-- China Netcom has recently awarded Nortel Networks
a contract to deploy its national optical transmission
backbone, further strengthening the latter's leadership
position in delivering next-generation optical networks
in China. The contract includes delivery and installation
of two new long-haul networks.
Under
the contract, China Netcom will be the first customer
to deploy Nortel's OPTera Connect HDX optical switch
in China. These two optical networks will span the most
prosperous cities in eastern China, positioning China
Netcom to offer new optical broadband services while
dramatically lowering its cost of network ownership.
One
of the two optical rings will connect the southeastern
regions of China and link the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing,
Hefei, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Fuzhou and Hangzhou.
The other ring will connect the eastern cities of Shanghai,
Nanjing, Wuhan, Xinyang, Jinan and Qingdao, and integrate
with China Netcom's existing optical backbones in northern
China.
Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer, Nortel
Networks China, said: "By deploying OPTera Connect
HDX, China Netcom is bringing the most advanced, proven
technology to its broadband network. Through proven
BLSR/MS-SPRing switching technology and support of ASTN
for mesh restoration and simplified provisioning, OPTera
Connect HDX will help China Netcom to enhance its time-to-revenue,
drastically improve network efficiency, and deliver
the most value-added services quickly. In addition,
our studies show that it has the capability to save
up to 45 percent in capital expenses and up to 55 percent
in operating expenses, including space and power consumption
savings of up to 80 percent over equivalent solutions."
OPTera
Connect HDX is part of Nortel Networks next-generation
optical networks portfolio, which is redefining the
economics of networking by generating revenue opportunities
for carriers through deployment of new optical broadband
services. China Netcom will also deploy Nortel Networks
OPTera long haul 1600 optical line system and OPTera
Connect DX optical switch to support an increase in
network capacity, service provisioning and reliability.
The OPTera Long Haul 1600 is a 10Gbps platform that
uses DWDM to split light into as many as 160 channels
to maximise capacity on each fibre. This enables up
to 28 million simultaneous Internet connections on a
single strand of fibre, and increases by 640 times the
Internet's backbone speed and capacity to carry data,
video and voice services.
