Sify provides tier-1IP network

NEW DELHI -- Sify Ltd. has become India's first tier 1-IP based network provider for Internet services, at par with the world famous telcos like AT&T.

R.Ramaraj, MD, Sify, said this infrastructure will provide next-generation networking services to the customers. Some corporates had acquired these services with high investment. Now, it will be possible for any corporate customer to have these services without making a huge investment.

Cisco has provided the required software and hardware for the transformation of Sify's backbone Internet service. Manoj Chugh, Cisco president for India and SARC, said: "It is strategic from the Indian perspective as it will help Indian enterprises to be globally competitive. There will be significant benefits to a whole lot of customers. It is the Gigabit switch router (GSR) of Cisco that powers the Sify backbone."

Though corporates will be the main customers, Ramaraj does not rule out reaching out to home users of Internet through Sify broadband. The VPN network will likely cost only a third of what it costs to build a VSAT-based network. The major benefit of Sify's network will be multiple applications on the same network. This means that the customer need not invest in multiple chains as he acquires the ability to extend applications across the enterprise through Sify's network.

"Companies in India are in the process of implementing enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, customer relationship management and a host of other enterprise applications. To maximise their investment in these applications, they need to be able to get good data into their systems in a timely manner. Sify's SecureConnect, a comprehensive range of IP VPN solutions running on the foundation of its tier-1 network infrastructure is designed to do this," added Ramaraj.
