VERITAS
Backup Exec suite protects SMBs' data
BANGALORE
-- VERITAS Software Corp. recently unveiled the Backup
Exec 10.0 for Windows Server software, offering simplified
and centralized management for Windows backup servers
through a single console, and accelerated disk-based
data backups and restores to address the growing and
agile needs of small and medium-size businesses.
It also announced a new comprehensive and integrated
Windows data protection product suite, the VERITAS Backup
Exec 10.0 Suite that integrates with VERITAS Replication
Exec 3.1 (formerly VERITAS Storage Replicator) and VERITAS
Storage Exec 5.3 (formerly VERITAS StorageCentral) software
to deliver unprecedented levels of continuous data protection
across all central and remote locations including desktops
and laptops, while controlling and maximizing Windows
storage resources.
Mika Krammer, analyst, Gartner Research, said: "Protecting
growing volumes of business critical data is a key business
requirement for all companies. As IT organizations progress
through the continuum of a comprehensive and efficient
data management strategy, rapid recovery of data is
a key component of operational efficiency - the number
one need for small to medium-size businesses."
Today, companies of all sizes must comply with complex
regulatory requirements and are tasked with doing so
with the least impact to IT budgets. With the release
of VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 and the VERITAS Backup Exec
Suite (Backup Exec 10.0, Replication Exec 3.1, Storage
Exec 5.3) of integrated recovery and management products,
they can now seamlessly protect mission-critical data,
expedite data recovery and maintain regulatory compliance
through efficient, policy-based management capabilities,
utilizing existing hardware and staff from a single
point of administration.
Continuous data protection: As SMBs maintain
agile IT resources; they are continually tasked with
lowering the cost of IT, while squeezing maximum value
from the existing IT infrastructure. The VERITAS Backup
Exec Suite of software enables firms to seamlessly protect
information exposed to the greatest risk - in remote
offices and on individual desktops and laptops. Replication
of data further reduces cost and centralizes backups
across an organization without disrupting normal server
operations or requiring incremental investments in remote
office administrators and hardware.
Fast disk-based recovery: With the release
of Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers, VERITAS has
added faster disk-based recovery capabilities. The advanced
disk-based backup option enables customers to restore
data in half the time than traditional methods. In a
recent independent disk restore performance benchmark
study performed by VeriTest, researchers found that
VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 was more than twice as fast
as HP Data Protector 5.5 and Computer Associates ARCserve
11.1 when performing a full volume restore from disk.
Key features of VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 Advanced
Disk-based Backup Option include:
Synthetic backup: This new feature enhances
restore times without the need to take a full backup
by seamlessly melding together smaller incremental backups
into a single synthetic full backup, expediting data
restores and consuming minimal network bandwidth; and
Off-host backup: This new feature enables
zero impact data protection across storage area networks
(SANs) by automatically shifting the backup of data
snapshots to alternate storage systems.
With the continued exponential growth of data across
growing companies, the VERITAS Backup Exec Suite of
software scales effectively to meet todays as well as
future requirements. VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0 and the
Backup Exec Suite of software provide the administrators
with tools to ease the IT growth process and cost-effectively
manage data.
With the VERITAS Backup Exec QuickStart Edition, it
is offering a single server version of Backup Exec software
for the first time. Backup Exec QuickStart is ideal
for quick and easy backup of data on single servers
(file/print server, web server), is simple to set up
and manage, and provides cost-effective features for
first-time server and storage buyers with basic IT needs.
Backup Exec QuickStart software will only be available
from server and storage OEMs. Customer upgrades to Backup
Exec 10.0, including its full array of options, will
be available through the worldwide network of VERITAS
channel partners.
Besides the existing remote agent that protects MS Windows
and Novell NetWare Servers, VERITAS Backup Exec 10.0
is now available with a high-performance remote agent
that supports Red Hat and SUSE Linux servers and Sun
Solaris UNIX servers. Backup Exec remote agents help
minimize network traffic and maximize performance to
reduce backup times.
