- Demand for outsourced security services to jump up (15 July 2008)
According to a report released by Gartner Inc, the demand for outsourced security services will increase with the rise of Software as a Service (SaaS). The demand will rise in the next five years as companies use more outsourced applications.
As per the research firm, outsourced services this year account for 20% of revenue in the messaging security market, such as antimalware and antispam services for email and instant messaging, but will jump to 60% by 2013.

New media Trojan detected (11 July 2008)
Researchers at Secure Computing have detected a Trojan infecting MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files, as well as Windows Media Video (WMV) files. The Trojan is spreading quickly to users of P2P file sharing programs such as Limewire. When an infected media file is opened, the Windows Media Player is redirected to a malicious site hosting a fake codec and malware.

Microsoft issues DNS, SQL Server updates (7 July 2008)
Microsoft announced that it would repair vulnerabilities in SQL Server and Windows that could allow an elevation of privilege, spoofing and remote code execution. Microsoft issued four security bulletins, correcting nine flaws in SQL Server and Windows that could allow an elevation of privilege of an authenticated attacker or remote code execution.

PCI Requirement 6.6 takes effect (30 June 2008)
The PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) requirement for securing Web applications came into effect on 30th June. Requirement 6.6 gives two options to merchants and other organizations that need to be PCI compliant for protecting Web applications. The options include application code reviews and Web application firewalls.
Since the last two years, the requirement has been a best practice giving companies a long lead-time to put a strategy in place. However, it appears that the Level 1 merchants who more than six million payment card transactions annually are the ones who are prepared and the others seem to be struggling to meet the requirements. Also, the Web application firewall is the more preferred option to meet the requirement.

Symantec launches Endpoint Management Suite (23 Jun 2008)
Symantec integrated its acquisition of Altiris with the release of Endpoint Management Suite 1.0. Symantec's announcement of Symantec Endpoint Management Suite 1.0 leverages its acquisition of Altiris early last year. The suite combines Altiris Client Management Suite 6, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 and Backup Exec System Recovery 8 Desktop Edition into a central management platform. The Altiris component is the key now and for future integration of Symantec, as well as third-party products. The release of the endpoint management suite has been an expected progression since the acquisition.
