Info services, messaging to drive mobile Internet
NEW DELHI -- Information services, messaging/email and
entertainment services are likely to generate the majority
of revenue for mobile applications during 2003. Web
browsing however, will remain a low priority among the
users. Mobile services such as music and movie clips,
games, and ring tones are likely to be the major revenue
generators during 2003 as well. While music and movie
clips are likely to be a major revenue generator in
2004, MMS is likely to take off and play a major role
next year. These are some of the finding of the survey:
Mobile Applications in India: A Users' Perspective,
conducted by Convergence Plus, the leading magazine
on converging technologies, and co-authored by Pradeep
Chakraborty and Geetanjali Wadhwa.
The
survey found that m-commerce services related to downloading
and listening to music and ticketing applications will
be the key revenue generators for 2003. New handsets
will emerge as the major factor influencing mobile Internet
services. Smart cards and location specific services
will likely be the key enablers of mobile data applications
for the period under review.
Here
are some other findings:
- The
youth will likely generate the majority of revenue
for mobile Internet services, followed by mass consumers
and corporate users during 2003 and 2004. Corporates
are likely to generate a substantial amount of revenue
as well during 2004.
- Flat
fee access to all services is likely to emerge as
the most common business model for mobile Internet
service, followed closely by volume-based usage fee
and subscription for selected services.
- Engaging
mobile Internet services alone, would be the key determinant
for reducing churn, followed by the actual content
delivered over the mobile phones as well as mobile
applications.
- Mobile
phone operators are likely to get more aggressive
in the mobile Internet segment during 2004, and play
the key influencing role.
- Handset/terminal
interoperability is the biggest technical challenge
faced by the mobile Internet segment, for developing
mobile Internet technologies/services, followed by
backward compatibility.
- The
Windows CE/PocketPC platform is likely to emerge as
the most widely used platform during 2003-04, followed
by the Palm OS. Though EPOC/Symbian is likely to emerge
as the least used platform during 2003-04, it does
not indicate that either Microsoft or Palm has won
the OS war.
- Wireless
markup language (WML), Java and extensible markup
language (XML) are likely to emerge as the most widely
used standards for developing mobile applications
during 2003-04.
