ZTE to have formidable presence in CDMA handsets

Geetanjali Wadhwa & Pradeep Chakraborty

ZTE Corp. needs no introduction. The leading Chinese vendor has a wide-ranging product portfolio, covering the gamut of leading technologies. On the eve of the 12th Convergence India 2004, Devendra Singh, assistant manager, Corporate Communications tells Convergence plus in an email interview how ZTE will place emphasis on CDMA handsets and will have a formidable presence in the country. Excerpts from the interview:

Convergence plus: What products and solutions will you demonstrate at the show?

Devendra Singh: ZTE has a wide range of products, and excellent technologies spanning wireless, wired, and handset products. The wireless products cover GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA systems. The wired products cover switch, broadband access, and optical transmission. The handset products cover three kinds of systems comprising GSM and CDMA.

CP: What are your strategies for entering the CDMA handsets segment?

ZTE: ZTE already has a contract with MTNL to supply 50,000 CDMA handsets. This deal is worth Rs. 19 crore approximately. Now, this should clearly demonstrate ZTE's strength in terminals. Furthermore, ZTE India will now place emphasis on the private players as well for this product line. In the near future, ZTE will have a formidable presence in CDMA terminals – with the public as well as the private sector.

CP: How do you perceive broadband taking off in India, and what role do you see yourself playing in this?

ZTE: Broadband connectivity is one of the fastest emerging areas in Internet connectivity these days. The high cost of dial-up connectivity and the poor quality of user experience is only going to help the broadband market. Until recently, customers' broadband requirement was primarily for browsing and email. Now, the requirement is for Internet telephony, VPN, chatting, and downloading files. This shift has increased the bandwidth requirements per user.

CP: How is the Unicom CDMA network doing in China? What has your role been so far?

ZTE: As the leading CDMA network equipment supplier in China, ZTE has established a strategic partnership with China Unicom by providing the operator with tailored network optimisation, maintenance, and new services development solutions. In fact, Qualcomm has been ZTE's strategic partner since 1999 when the two companies joined hands for CDMA R&D for use in China. Since then, they have continued to develop CDMA products together, including third-generation EV-DO systems, and now BREW. The experience gained from working closely with China Unicom is reaping rich rewards.
