Sterlite to provide OFC for OVL

MUMBAI -- Sterlite Optical Technologies, India's leading integrated manufacturer of optical fibers and telecom cables was recently awarded a contract for supplying optic fiber cables to Sudan, Africa amidst stiff competition from other international companies.

Valued at over INR 25 million, the contract is a part of an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) of a multi-product pipeline project being executed by Dodsal for ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL).

The superior Sterlite Armor-LiteT optic fiber cables are to be laid from Khartoum Refinery at Al Rawyan to the Receipt Terminal of Sudan Petroleum Pipeline Company (SPPC) at Port Sudan and the optical communication shall be through this cable. This contract marks an important milestone in Sterlite's strategy to take advantage of global opportunities and enter new markets. During recent years, Sterlite made impressive gains in international markets such as China and the Middle East and is attempting to gain a foothold in other emerging markets. Sterlite enjoys a 7 percent marketshare in China.

Dr. Anand Agarwal, CEO, Sterlite, said: "It is encouraging to be a part of an export deal, where the client and the vendor are Indian businesses. We have broken new ground in another market with this win. Our strategy and efforts to build the export base is bearing results. We'd like to have customers across the world take to our high-technology products, the way the Chinese have taken to it."

The Sudan Pipeline Project envisages laying of a 12-inch diameter pipeline from Khartoum Refinery to Port Sudan for evacuation of petro-products from Khartoum Refinery; the capacity of which is being upgraded by Sudan. The pipeline system is designed for a throughput of 0.826 million tonnes per annum in phase-I and 2.54 million tonnes per annum in phase-II, of gas oil and gasoline. The total length of the pipeline is 741km. The cables are to be laid alongside the entire length of the pipeline route and the optical communication and signaling for the pipeline operation would be through these cables.
