Juniper, Lucent ally to deliver unified solutions

HONG KONG -- Juniper Networks Inc. and Lucent Technologies recently announced a partnership to deliver unified solutions dedicated to helping service providers evolve today's networks to tomorrow's full-service IP infrastructure. Leveraging the companies' combined expertise in networking, this unique partnership delivers market-ready solutions through a strong channel relationship. In addition, the companies are collaborating on joint development to enable service providers to transform their networks smoothly and profitably.

The two companies are introducing a set of unified solutions for deploying core, data, broadband and metro optical networks that support a range of revenue-generating services. Lucent Navis integrated network management software will improve efficiencies and reduce operating costs. Focused on equipment market segments that combined will grow from an estimated $8.5 billion dollars in 2003 to $12.2 billion in 2005, these solutions will help service providers maximise the return on their existing infrastructure, optimise future network investments and simplify the service delivery process.

Leveraging its multiprotocol (TDM, FR/ATM, IP/MPLS) and multivendor capabilities, Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) will support each one of the solutions with network design, deployment and maintenance services to increase speed-to-market and reduce operational costs for service providers. Lucent's services organization will integrate the solutions to make them easier and faster for service providers to deploy.

Paul Lacouture, president of Network Services for Verizon Communications, said: "This partnership makes sense to us and gives us a path to leverage our embedded base of data networks. We are very interested in how quickly they can meet the challenge of provisioning and managing new IP-based services end-to-end across our networks."

Pat Russo, chairman and CEO of Lucent Technologies, added: "We will provide our customers with a clear blueprint for an intelligent network evolution that protects today's service revenue streams, while laying a foundation for capturing revenue from tomorrow's next-generation broadband, optical Ethernet and IP services. This is a partnership that works for our customers because of the combination of our strengths."

Scott Kriens, CEO of Juniper Networks, noted: "Service providers looking to transform to more cost-optimised networks need companies that excel in providing leading voice, frame relay/ATM and optical networking solutions, as well as companies that excel at providing full service IP networking solutions. This partnership combines those capabilities now. A significant differentiator for our partnership is Lucent's strength as a network integrator. Together, we will have a powerful capability to provide customers with integrated, next-generation solutions that leverage their existing investment, an integrated network solutions roadmap for the future, and a single point of contact for network services providing design, implementation and on-going customer support."

Janet Davidson, president of Lucent's Integrated Network Solutions group, said: "These unified solutions add value to the systems and software already deployed in service provider networks by increasing network scalability, manageability, and ease of migration to new architectures. Our joint development work will ensure that our unified solutions will keep pace with changing customer needs and market opportunities."

The unified solutions include:

  • IP VPN (available now) -- a cost-effective solution based on existing products that enables service providers to offer a full range of VPN services over a common IP/MPLS core network.
  • Multiservice MPLS core (available Q1 2004) -- a cost-effective solution to grow ATM/Frame Relay revenues and add IP services onto a converged IP/MPLS core.
  • IP Centrex (available now) -- a solution that enables service providers to deliver business-quality IP Centrex services to thousands of enterprises over a flexible, cost-effective, packet-based network.
  • Enhanced DSL (available now) -- a scalable, efficient, enhanced services xDSL solution that will enable service providers to address mass-market xDSL service rollout.
  • Optical edge (under joint development) -- a solution designed to help expand the enterprise market for high-value Ethernet services over existing service provider networks.
