Surge
in DSLAMs and DSL CPE in Q1-03
LONDON
-- Worldwide DSLAM equipment revenue jumped 21 percent
to US $613 million between Q4-02 and Q1-03, and DSL
CPE revenue hit US $540 million, up 20 percent from
Q4-02, according to Infonetics Research's broadband
hardware: DSL and broadband hardware: cable quarterly
worldwide market share and forecast reports.
On
the downside, worldwide cable CPE revenue totaled US
$250 million in Q1-03, down 12 percent from Q4-02; ADSL
modem unit shipments fell 7 percent and revenue fell
15 percent; and CMTS gear dropped 35 percent to return
to Q3-02 levels.
Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst of
Infonetics Research, said: "We may be seeing the
resurgence of the DSLAM market, with a booming 21 percent
increase in Q1-03 over Q4-02, even in the face of continued
capex reductions by service providers. Though spending
in optical and other areas declined, carriers are buying
DSLAM equipment, with the strongest showings in Asia
and Europe this quarter. On the other hand, MSOs spent
less this quarter on CMTS gear, with a disappointing
35 percent drop in worldwide revenue from Q4-02 to Q1-03,
matching the lowest quarterly revenue of 2002 (after
a huge Q4-02)."
Richard
Webb, who co-authored the report, added: "Both
cable and DSL modem units and revenue dropped in Q1-03.
It was not likely that sales would match the strong
pre-holiday run in Q4-02, but sales will pick up through
2003 as broadband availability increases and modem pricing
continues to commoditise."
