Digital broadcasting to enhance TV and Internet access

Guidelines to help countries manage their transition from analogue to digital broadcasting were presented during the ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-10) in Hyderabad, India.

The transition to digital broadcasting has become an important global issue. It will provide a greater number of channels with higher quality within the same available bandwidth along with advanced applications and features, such as interactivity and electronic programme guides.

The guidelines provide information and recommendations on policy, regulation, technologies, network planning, customer awareness and business planning for the smooth transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) and the introduction of Mobile Television Broadcasting (MTV).

“The Guidelines for the Transition from Analogue to Digital Broadcasting” were developed by the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau with the support of the Korean Communications Commission (KCC), Republic of Korea.

Gartner says Worldwide Semiconductor revenue to grow 27% in 2010

Worldwide semiconductor revenue in 2010 is forecast to reach US$290 billion, a 27.1 % increase from 2009 revenue of US$228 billion, according to the latest outlook by Gartner, Inc.

The outlook for the semiconductor industry has improved from Gartner's first quarter 2010 forecast, when it projected worldwide semiconductor sales to grow 19.9 %. Analysts said this improvement in market conditions is in part due to an accelerated broad-based recovery in all regions and most product categories.

Gartner analysts expect the semiconductor industry to show continued growth through its forecast period in 2014. The market is on track to surpass the US$300 billion mark in 2011, when the market is forecast to total US$307 billion.

Telecom Subscription Data as on 30th April 2010

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 638.05 million at the end of April-2010 from 621.28 million in March-2010, thereby registering a growth rate of 2.70%. With this, the overall Tele-density in India reaches 54.10

In case of the Wireless subscriber base, it increased from 584.32 million in March-2010 to 601.22 million at the end of April-2010 registering a growth of 2.89% and with a Wireless Teledensity of 50.98.

On the other hand, Wireline subscriber base declined from 36.96 million in March-2010 to 36.83 million at the end of April-2010. BSNL/MTNL, two PSU operators hold 84.64% of the Wireline market share. The overall Wireline teledensity stands at 3.12.

Total Broadband subscriber base has increased from 8.75 million in March-2010 to 9 million in April-2010, there by showing a growth of 2.80%.

Samsung India introduces 3G full touch handset - Star Nano 3G

Samsung Electronics, leading mobile phone manufacturer, announced the launch of its most affordable, full touch 3G enabled handset, Star Nano 3G (S3370). The compact Samsung Star Nano 3G has a curvilinear design with advanced connectivity and seamless social communication.

Designed aesthetically with a compact and curvilinear design, a large 2.6” screen and with a 4 page menu, the Samsung Star Nano 3G offers a great resolution and a sense of elegance to its user. The phone has advanced connectivity with 384kbps DL/UL (3G ready), Pop Up SNS and fast multimedia downloads. The Touchwiz 2.0 Plus in the phone ensures seamless navigation home screen widgets, Gesture control and an interesting UI.

ON Semiconductor Launches IPD2 Process Technology that Combines HighQ™ Performance and Small Size for Portable Electronics Applications

Microchip announces industry's most flexible range of extreme low power, high performance 8-bit microcontrollers

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced the introduction of the PIC18F 'K90' and the PIC18F 'K22' families of 8-bit microcontrollers, the latest MCUs based on its industry-leading low power technology, nanoWatt XLP.

The 'K90' represents the industry's first and only ultra low power MCU family to include an on-chip LCD driver module capable of driving LCDs up to 192 pixels.
