Threat to Indian pay-TV growth
July 16, 2009
The Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) has expressed new concerns over the recent Indian government levy of additional duties on imported set-top box (STB) or cable TV decoders. On July 6th, Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced the 5% customs duty on import of STBs.
The move may prove detrimental for consumers who will now need to pay more for digital services such as DTH (Direct to Home satellite) and digital cable TV subscriptions.
CASBAA estimates the number of digital homes in India at 16 million out of almost 82 million cable TV connections. The most recent data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) shows 13.09 million digital DTH subscribers and the growth of this relatively new DTH sector could also be hit by the new tax rates.
According to Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA, “The broadcast industry still needs government support in the form of a reasonable (and reasoned) tax environment if it is to grow further.” Only then can Indian media and communication companies truly deliver genuine choice at a genuinely competitive market price.

Jul 17, 2009
According to RNCOS’ research report entitled ‘Indian Telecom Analysis (2008-2012)’, India’s telecom sector will maintain its growth rate in future despite the global economic downturn. This growth will be driven by the country’s expanding mobile subscriber base, which is projected to reach 800 million users by the fiscal year 2014.
RNCOS finds that rising incomes and falling tariffs are making mobile phones affordable for new customers. According to the report, the highly competitive nature of the telecom market is also driving down tariffs. Mobile players are seeing rural areas as new growth avenues, as the urban market is reaching saturation levels.
