Cloudmark announces launch of Advanced Mobile Messaging Security Solution
June 28

Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in carrier-grade messaging security, announced the launch of the Cloudmark Mobile Messaging Security Solution, a fully comprehensive security offering which encompasses a global reporting and analysis component, as well as an automated, active messaging filtering solution.

In conjunction with the launch of the new solution, the company has also launched its 2011 Mobile Spam Guide (www.cloudmark.com/spamguide), a definitive toolkit designed to help the wider ecosystem address the growing problem of mobile spam.

The Cloudmark Mobile Messaging Security Solution is a high-performance, carrier-grade messaging security solution that will enable operators to combat ever-evolving messaging threats with advanced mobile anti-virus, subscriber behaviour analysis and subscriber preference capabilities. The new solution allows mobile operators to rapidly create customized scenarios which best suit the needs of their individual network and subscriber base, while also protecting against annoying and malicious spam activity, in the following ways:

  • Mobile Malware/ Virus – Prevents viruses, malware and malicious code from reaching handsets, identifying infected handsets and helping operators to remediate
  • Fraud – Protects subscribers from financial fraud with real-time intelligence on ‘bad’ senders and links
  • Content Control – Prevents spam and other unwanted/abusive content from reaching subscribers and engaging them with a spam reporting channel
  • Anti-Bullying – Enforces per-subscriber blacklists and whitelists

Messaging security threats are already a big problem for Asian mobile operators. Recent research conducted by Cloudmark indicated that the top attacks in Asia consisted of 60% loan spam, 33% gambling spam and 7% pharmacy spam. Additionally mobile spam has already had significant impact on operators financially—not just in terms of customer churn costs but also due to the impact that high volumes of spam traffic can have on an already over burdened network.

Alan Ranger, Vice President of Mobile Marketing at Cloudmark, explains: “Mobile spam, fraud and malware have become a real problem for operators and subscribers alike over the last twelve months. The high returns available in the mobile channel have attracted attacks from traditional email spammers, who bring with them 10 years’ experience in avoiding detection in the fixed-line world. Regulation has had some affect on curtailing messaging abuse; however the global mobile community needs to collaborate to prevent these mobile messaging attacks from becoming as prominent as similar attacks in email.”

The latest release of the Cloudmark Mobile Platform not only allows operators to protect against rapidly mutating attacks but also provides them visibility into, and control over, their networks. Building on over ten years’ experience protecting 1.6 billion subscribers globally, the Cloudmark Mobile Platform is the only solution with the ability to report and flag anomalies on the network in real-time, as well as proactively protect mobile operators and their subscribers from new and emerging threats.

The GSMA and Cloudmark have also collaborated to create the GSMA Spam Reporting Service (SRS)*, a global initiative designed to allow subscribers to report instances of SMS spam to their network. Participating mobile operators automatically forward the reported message to the GSMA service, where it is analysed using Cloudmark’s advanced message fingerprinting technology. The data is then corroborated and an analysis of attacks within the reporting mobile operator’s network is produced.

PowerOasis Transforms the Economics of Power for Tower Operating Companies
June 23

PowerOasis launched its multi-tenant wireless network power management solution for tower operating companies at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore on June 23, 2011. The turnkey solution reduces power costs, increases site uptime and delivers power related business intelligence and reporting, allowing tower lease contracts to be fulfilled more profitably and with lower risk.

A number of market forces are converging to force mobile network operators to consider divesting their network infrastructure to focus on delivering subscriber value through innovative, differentiated and competitive service offerings. Such forces include increased competition, demand for data services, rural network expansion, regulatory compliance, reducing average revenue per user, global economic slowdown and rising energy costs. The consequence is that profit margins are being squeezed and there’s an increased dependency on unpredictable energy prices. Selling towers to a tower operating company under a leaseback agreement releases cash from the mobile network operator’s balance sheet and places responsibility for operations and maintenance on the tower company, freeing up the mobile network operator to focus on core business activities.

The PowerOasis solution supports power optimisation, power management and power generation. The power management platform is accessed from the tower operations centre to provide power-related business and operational support. Its inherent flexibility allows any site configuration to be catered for, including single or multi-tenancy, on/off/unreliable grid connection, retrofit or new build, any vendor’s power equipment and any network equipment provider’s BTS and transmission equipment. The solution therefore presents a single, unified, network-wide power management experience regardless of the underlying equipment.

Avaya presents ‘The Power of We’ Branding
June 22

To further showcase Avaya’s focus on next-generation business collaboration and communications, the company announced its latest corporate branding initiative titled ‘Avaya. The Power of We.’ Initially previewed at the International Avaya User Group in late May, the new company campaign will highlight the importance of bringing the right people together with the right information in the right context as well as the role of Avaya’s technology and services in making it possible.

“A lot of companies are talking about collaboration, but they're short on specifics,” said Kevin Kennedy, CEO, Avaya. “Avaya's vision is very clear: We help our customers bring the right people together with the information and context they need to help deliver business results in real time. Our objective is to give them the best collaboration experience, regardless of the devices, locations, or media they choose.”

The new brand builds on Avaya’s long-standing heritage of delivering mission-critical unified communications, contact center and voice and data communications solutions and will be supported by an integrated marketing campaign featuring print, broadcast, online and social media. As the company continues to enable businesses to improve their efficiency and allow employees to work together more effectively as a team or with their customers and suppliers, ‘Avaya. The Power of We.’ is a logical evolution for the company’s messaging, which not only more accurately describes Avaya’s strategic focus, but also addresses changing market conditions and communications trends.

“‘Avaya. The ‘Power of We.’ illustrates Avaya’s shift from the Age of Information to today’s Age of Collaboration where workers are more mobile and globally distributed and are expected to produce more with less resources at a faster pace,” said Dan Murphy, vice president, Global Marketing, Avaya. “Avaya technology integrates people with the information they need to foster a deeper level of collaboration, creativity, idea generation and faster decisions. Simply put, Avaya enables customer to leverage the power of ‘we’ for their own business.”

Nokia introduces Mobile Money Client on all Nokia devices
June 27

Continuing its efforts towards driving financial inclusion through mobility, Nokia announced that it has started to embed the Mobile Money client in all Nokia devices in India going forward. The Mobile Money service provides the unbanked and under-banked masses, access to financial services through their mobile phones, thus empowering people and their businesses. As part of Nokia’s vision of enabling a broad community with financial services, the Money client is available not only on high end Symbian smartphone devices, but also on Nokia´s Series 40 feature phones, as well as the Series 30 entry level devices and support both keyboard, touch and combined devices.

Nokia is building an open ecosystem for mobile payments in India and the Nokia Money mobile financial services initiative is already being implemented in India through partnerships with Union Bank of India (UBI), Yes Bank, Obopay and a wide range of merchants, retailers and business correspondents. The services, called Union Bank Money and Mobile Money Services by Yes Bank, are already available in several regions and are being rolled out across India in the forthcoming quarters.

Keeping with Nokia’s open approach and ecosystem for mobile financial services, the client is just branded “Money”. Consumers will have the option of choosing and subscribing to either Union Bank Money or YES Bank Mobile Money Services from their Nokia devices. The app can be activated at Nokia retail and other outlets, who are also authorized banking correspondents of Yes Bank and/or Union Bank of India.

Simple, safe and convenient, the service eliminates the need for intermediaries, delivering true convenience. The Money App is deeply integrated in its functionality with the phone and other phone services. For example, the selection of recipient in a send money transaction is directly integrated with the phone book; sending money thus becomes as simple as sending an SMS or making a phone call. To make the service simpler, the user-interface is de-coupled and separated from data transport. Therefore, the user does not need to know which transport (SMS, GPRS or Wifi) is in use during the transaction. Mobile Money Service allows users to avail multiple financial services functions such as:

  • Account management with detailed balance information, tracking of each transaction, details of each transaction done.
  • Bill payment
  • Money transfer
  • Cash withdrawal from Business Correspondents cash-out outlets (registered Nokia stores) and ATMs
  • Prepaid SIM top-up
  • Tell a friend

Consumers who already own a Nokia phone without the Mobile Money client can simply visit a Nokia Money agent and get the application loaded onto their existing phone. They can also use the service via text messages, which do not require the client.

Two Chinese Industry Groups honor CommScope for top wireless products and technologies
June 14

Two innovative wireless solutions offered by CommScope, a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communication networks, have won awards from industry groups in China recently.

The China Center for Information Industry Development—along with Chinese wireless operators China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom—named CommScope’s DualPol® base station antenna as a top 10 commercially promising technology during the 2011 Fifth Annual China Communications Technology Meeting held in Beijing.

DualPol base station antennas from CommScope were successfully demonstrated at the 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou in November 2010 where they helped enable reliable wireless coverage for the multitude of visiting fans and athletes. DualPol antennas are dual polarized to support two frequency bands in one antenna, decreasing the number of antennas needed to support multiple technologies. DualPol antennas are also remote electrical tilt compatible, meaning they can be tilted vertically to optimize cell configurations.

RADIAX cables from CommScope have been installed in numerous high speed railways, subways, stadiums, airports and office buildings throughout China. RADIAX cables help bring wireless coverage inside such structures by allowing RF signal to radiate out of the cable, enabling service in areas that macro network signals cannot reach. As mobile subscribers increasingly expect service wherever they are located, RADIAX cable and other Andrew® branded coverage and capacity solutions can help wireless operators meet customer demand.

CommScope has facilities in Suzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen, China to support the domestic wireless marketplace with product design and large-scale production capacities.
