MACH Data Roaming Engine offers Mobile Network Operators a Radical New Approach to Data Roaming Tariffs
February 1, 2011

MACH, the leading provider of hub-based mobile communication solutions, has announced the launch of its unique Data Roaming Engine, which is set to revolutionise the way Mobile Network Operators design and implement tariffs for subscribers wishing to access mobile data when abroad.

The first such solution to market, MACH’s Data Roaming Engine will be launched in Q2 of this year and will allow mobile network operators to offer all subscribers a bespoke set of data roaming packages. Customer trials are currently underway with two major Mobile Network Operators.

Developed by MACH’s Innovation team, the MACH Data Roaming Engine will allow mobile network operators to tailor data packages to fit their subscribers’ needs. For example, operators will be able to define data day packs or hour packs based on the requirements of the end user. Additional capabilities will allow users to define the services they use abroad: for the holidaying consumer there could be Facebook-only access, while the small business user could opt for Email-only access.

Packages can be defined by the operator to fit any application allowing the consumer to create a white list of applications that they wish to use whilst roaming. The solution also allows services to be rated differently according to the end user group the operator is targeting. This allows operators to offer services highly tailored to the needs of their subscribers, driving uptake while reducing the final cost to the end user and empowering them to select the services they want to use abroad.

The MACH Data Roaming Engine is standard-agnostic, allowing operators to offer a full range of data services across GSM, WiMAX or WiFi, and CDMA to GSM networks as required, helping them to expand their businesses into new global markets. Importantly, the solution enables data roaming for pre-paid users, opening up a lucrative and largely untapped revenue stream for Mobile Network Operators while improving the end-user experience.

Openwave introduces new development platform for browser-based applications
February 1, 2011

Openwave Systems Inc. a global software innovator delivering context-aware mediation and messaging solutions, announced Openwave® Amplicity™, a new browser-based, value-added services (VAS) solution designed to enable developers to leverage valuable mobile operator network assets to more rapidly create and deliver applications within the browser. Openwave Amplicity enables developers to rapidly achieve cross-platform reach, tapping into anonymous subscriber data to market their applications to consumers and enterprise customers, and monetize these applications through contextual advertising. In October 2010, Sprint was the first operator to announce a browser-VAS solution powered by Openwave.

One of the biggest challenges facing mobile developers today is fragmentation in the OS/application development environment. As platforms continue to evolve, there could be multiple versions within the same operating system. In addition, the variety of hardware form factors and capabilities – from smartphones to new entrants like tablets – make it difficult for developers to ensure that applications will port from one device to another. Openwave Amplicity helps increase the developers’ reach through a cross-platform footprint provided through HTML-5. Consumers can reap the benefits of a more contextually relevant browsing experience with a more personalized way to consume their applications that Openwave Amplicity places on their mobile phones.
