Launch of MNP Services further extended till June 30, 2010

As per an official statement, the launch of MNP has been further extended to June 30, 2010 after assessing the readiness of various operators. This is for the second time the MNP launch is delayed.
Earlier in December, it was delayed till March 30 as operators could not meet the deadline. Now, the roll-out will not happen before July. Department of Telecom (DoT) will finally decide the dates for MNP implementation after assessing the results.
TRAI releases consultation paper on -“Tariff Issues related to Cable TV Services in Non- CAS Areas”

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper on-“Tariff Issues related to Cable TV Services in Non-CAS Areas”.
The consultation paper has been prepared based on (i) inputs on financial and operational information given by the stakeholders (broadcasters, MSOs, cable operators, DTH operators and consumer advocacy groups) (ii) information obtained during meetings with the stakeholders and their associations (iii) published secondary sources of information including annual reports and financial statements and (iv) interaction with international regulators.
TRAI has invited all stakeholders to respond to the issues raised in this consultation paper by 25th April, 2010. Comments will be posted on TRAI website as and when received. Counter comments, if any, to the comments received may be sent to TRAI by 5th May, 2010.
Telecom subscribers cross 600 mn mark

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 600.69 million at the end of February-2010 from 581.97 million in January-2010, thereby registering a growth rate of 3.22%. With this, the overall tele-density in India reaches 51.05.
Wireless subscriber base increased from 544.98 million in January-2010 to
563.73 million at the end of February-2010 registering a growth of 3.44%.
Wireless tele-density stands at 47.91. On the other hand, the wireline subscriber base slightly declined from 36.99 million in January-2010 to 36.96 million at the end of February-2010.
In case of broadband, total subscriber base has increased from 8.03 million in January- 2010 to 8.59 million in February-2010, thereby showing a growth of 6.95%.
Indian Business Process Market to grow 25 % in 2010: Gartner

According to Gartner, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) market in India is estimated to grow 19 % through 2013. The domestic India BPO services market grew by 7.3 % year on year in 2009 primarily due to the global economic uncertainty which led to some price and volume pressures. Gartner estimates the Indian domestic BPO market will grow into a US$1.2 billion market by 2011 and grow to US$1.8 billion by 2013.
GSM operators add 13 million subscribers in Feb

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India, GSM-based mobile operators added 13 million new subscribers in February 2010. This takes the total tally to 407.8 million subscribers.
Among the GSM players, Vodafone got the maximum number of new subscribers in February with an addition of 3 million users. Vodafone now has 97 million subscribers.
Bharti Airtel increased its tally by 2.9 million subscribers to take the total to 124 million. Idea Cellular got 2.2 million and now has 62 million subscribers on its network. BSNL added 1.5 million subscribers to take its total base to 61 million.
Among the new players, Uninor got over a million fresh subscriptions and STel reported 2.1 lakh new users.

Airtel, Vodafone to launch iPhone 3GS in India

Bharti Airtel launched iPhone 3GS to its 124 million customers in India on March 26, months after its launch in the US market. The 16 GB model of 3GS will cost over Rs 35,500 and the 32GB model will retail at Rs 41,500. Vodafone too, is expected to launch the 3GS with iPhone-specific data plans.
Bharti Airtel is hoping to sweeten the 3GS prices, by offering 500-MB free data for 12 months. Meanwhile, the prices of iPhone 3G (8GB model) has been decreased by nearly Rs 1500 to Rs 29,500.
Fujitsu launches new line of 3G ready Lifebooks

YTL Communications selects Connectiva Systems to assure its WiMAX revenue stream
