China
Mobile selects Huawei for mobile mode WLAN
BEIJING,
CHINA - Huawei Technologies, a leading global supplier
of telecom infrastructure, has been selected as the
premier supplier to provide its customized and cost-effective
WLAN equipment for China Mobile, the largest mobile
operator in China.
This
is the first commercial mobile operator WLAN system
launched in the world, which will be integrated into
the incumbent GPRS network of China Mobile. In this
contracted project, Huawei is the sole provider for
the Authentication Server (AS) equipment and will deliver
most of the other equipment for the WLAN system, such
as Access Controller (AC) and Access Point (AP). The
WLAN system has a capacity for about 350,000 subscribers.
WLAN
technology has recently been used more and more at homes,
at offices and in public indoor areas, such as airport
lounges, hotels and conference centers. It enables broadband
wireless public access to the Internet and corporate
Intranets with less investment, compared with wired
access approach. The conventional WLAN, however, has
some disadvantages, such as poor coverage and lack of
roaming agreements.
Unlike
the traditional solution, Huawei's WLAN is specially
tailored for mobile operators and can be easily integrated
with the existing GPRS and cdma2000 networks. It combines
the benefits of 2G and 3G mobile systems, including
unlimited roaming and mobility, with additional throughput
and capacity in indoor hotspots. Huawei's WLAN can share
the authentication, security protection and billing
functionality with the existing mobile networks, which
WLAN is attached to. It is fully compatible with the
conventional WLAN solution as well. In the near future,
the mainstream WLAN specification, i.e. 802.11a, will
provide a data capacity of up to 54Mbps. Huawei's WLAN
solution will evolve to support the WLAN-W-CDMA integrated
specification drawn up by 3GPP.
"WLAN
is a complementary service offering for mobile operators,"
said Ms Yu Xiangping, Director of International Marketing
Division for Mobile Products at Huawei Technologies.
"Featuring the fastest wireless indoor data access
up to 11Mbps, WLAN will undoubtedly be a strong attraction
for business people and company executives. Huawei mobile
mode WLAN solution will help mobile operators gain more
high-end subscribers, generate new revenue streams and
enhance their customer loyalty."
