Pramod Mahajan launches Idea's cellular service
NEW DELHI -- Pramod Mahajan, the Union Minister of Communications,
Information Technology and Parliamentary Affairs, today
launched the services of Idea Cellular Ltd in New Delhi.
Idea is launching India's first 3G compatible EDGE upgradeable
network. This will enable it to launch high-speed data
services, offer multimedia services and operate superior
quality of voice telephony network. The network can
handle over 925 cells from day one - for seamless coverage
in Delhi and NCR, and 600,000 simultaneous call handling
capacity (BHCA) at any given time - which is said to
be much higher than any other network.
This is also Delhi's only GPRS-enabled network, and
will allow users to experience true, full capacity MMS
on both prepaid and postpaid. For the first time, Delhi
subscribers will also get full roaming on prepaid -
in Mumbai and six other circles. Idea's subscribers
will also receive automatic national roaming for incoming
calls.
For the first time, the prepaid customer will get to
choose a tariff plan that suits his needs and Idea philosophy.
- 'pay less for more' - which will reward him/her for
higher usage. Idea's M-coupon, its first ever, innovative
value-added service, will also enable users to avail
discounts at the flash of his/her mobile.

Himanshu Kapania, COO of Idea Cellular, added that the
operator has also set up a "full capacity, 24x7
call center that will offer personalized assistance
to Idea's subscribers, within a response time of three
rings - which is minutes ahead of current practice as
voiced by consumer research."
