PwC and Microsoft launch VAT solution

NEW DELHI: PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) India and Microsoft Corp. India Pvt. Ltd. have launched the first off-the-shelf value-added tax (VAT) solution for state tax departments in India. Developed by PwC, using the Microsoft.NET framework, the solution simplifies the task of filing sales tax returns by businesses. It facilitates the consolidation of results by state tax department on a periodic basis.

The solution is based on the current model of the Government of India VAT. It can be customised as per the needs of each state. The PwC VAT application will enable state tax departments to administer registration of dealers, periodic returns from dealers, assessment, realisation, reassessment, interest and penalties, recovery, appeals, identification of potential taxpayers and install check gates. These check gates will enable relevant information to be replicated, extracted and uploaded to the main system at all the government offices.

The solution has an assessment computation engine that provides computed assessment of tax liabilities of dealers, which can then be compared against the dealer's actual declaration. Any discrepancies can be easily judged. There is a provision of developing and installing a standalone system at the dealer's end as well. All the state governments are expected to switch over to the VAT with effect from April 2003.
