Flash Memory Cards Industry – India vis-à-vis European markets

Flash memory cards are available in standard capacities ranging from 128MB to 2GB going up to 5GB. While the Indian threshold for memory consumption for a flash card is 128MB, in Europe and the US, this has now increased to 512MB.

International brands in flash memory cards available in India such as SanDisk, Lexar and Kingston have launched their low end models with speeds as low as 8X which is the lowest in the processing speed range of 8X to 66X. A low speed translates into longer processing time for uploading the information from the card on to the end device. MCC Group’s range of flash memory cards come in 30X and 45X speeds.

As per a survey conducted by a leading brand in memory card solutions in India, MCC emerges as the undisputed leader amongst the branded segment in the Indian memory cards industry in terms of market share with projections of 25 percent market share by fiscal end. The Indian Industry valued at 18, 00,000 cards a year in volume and Rs.1800 million in value has MCC 's growth projections of a 20 percent market share  with  approx 0.375 million cards in volume.

Ajay Mehta, CEO, MCC Group, said: “With the unprecedented boom in the growth of Consumer and Electronics segment in India, we envisaged the immediate demand for high speed, compatible, technologically proven and reliable NAND flash memory cards for these devices. An estimated 40 percent of the total mobile phones handsets in India have slots for external storage. With even low priced phones with good quality digital cameras, decreasing laptop and digital camera costs, the need for external storage or memory cards is set to increase. Presently, an estimated industry size of 18, 00,000 cards a year in volume and Rs.1800 million in value prove that the industry has been growing at a fast pace and growth potential will only look northwards hereon with leading mobile phone manufacturers launching high end, multi-featured models at competitive prices.”
