NEW DELHI -- Craig Barrett, the CEO of leading chip giant, Intel, has challenged India to build upon its software expertise and become a "total IT nation" engaged in creating, manufacturing and deployment of information technologies.

During a recent visit to India, Barrett said: "By pursuing a bold IT strategy, India can become a leader in expanding a digitally-driven economy throughout Asia and the world." He further advised that India must take a balanced approach to innovation. He said: "We urge India to extend its software leadership into new areas of innovation, including circuit design, hardware creation, high-tech manufacturing and delivery of IT services. Adopting a strategy of balanced technology innovation is key to India's long-term economic growth."

To illustrate Intel's belief in India's future as well as its commitment to balanced technology innovation, Barrett announced that a design team is being established to engage in high-end, 32-bit Intel architecture microprocessor design and development at the Intel India Development Center in Bangalore. Barrett said that 86 percent of India's top 100 companies have Internet and e-commerce services as an integral part of their strategic framework for the coming year. He said over 50 million Indians would be connected to the Internet by 2005, up from 10 million today.

"The build-out of the Internet goes on and the pace of technology is not slowing," Barrett said, adding that in the digital future, people will access the Internet anytime and anywhere with devices offering computing and communications capabilities.

Barrett announced that the 'Intel Teach to the Future program' had trained 100,000 teachers in India, which represents almost half of the 215,000 teachers trained throughout Asia. These teachers will be able to effectively integrate computer technology into classrooms to improve the learning abilities of students and achievements all over the country.
