Sun, Lucent launch solution for enhanced communications

GENEVA -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Lucent Technologies announced the availability of a suite of products, services and marketing programs called the iForce solution for enhanced communications for service provider and enterprise customers. This solution converges voice and data offerings, seamlessly linking PCs with telephones and enabling users to manage wireline or mobile calls easily and effectively.

Designed to help service providers boost revenue by increasing the operational efficiencies of enterprises, the iForce solution reduces communication bottlenecks for end users. The solution works in conjunction with telephony systems to help deliver an extensive set of IP-enhanced productivity and convenience features, such as Web voice-controlled, real-time conference call set-up, in which the system finds and contacts the participants whether they are using a standard phone, IP phone, mobile device or a PC.

The iForce solution can be configured as a hosted solution, in which a service provider maintains and manages the equipment and offers these services to its customers either individually or as part of a bundle. It can also be located at an enterprise, so the solution is managed at the enterprise, helping to seamlessly integrate with other applications that the company already provides to its users.

The solution offers multiple benefits that include a unified communications portal for easy, anytime-anywhere access and management of calls, messages, conference calls, contact lists and calendars, including the use of voice-controlled applications such as speech dialing, speech messaging, voice portal and speech-enabled Web services; the ability to leverage existing and next-gen switch technology in hosted and customer premise-based call control environments supporting legacy and IP handsets; and increased employee productivity through the integration of desktop communication tools with voice and data capabilities.

Phil Sasso, senior director, telecommunications industry, Sun, said: "The iForce solution is a natural extension of Sun Java enterprise system, a pre-integrated foundation for the delivery of network services. By adding the 'glue' that interfaces with different kinds of voice networks that exist, Lucent has created exactly the kind of ubiquitous and intuitive capabilities that we believe are necessary to enable seamless mobility for enterprise workforces."

Frank Farese, senior vice president, business partner and software sales, Lucent, added: "This exciting global offer is a result of the longtime collaboration between Sun and Lucent. We are taking the best of what Lucent has to offer from our long experience with carrier-class solutions and teaming with Sun, which has unparalleled knowledge of how enterprises want to communicate, to bring a solid, reliable solution to our customers."
