Huawei launches UMTS and NGN products

GENEVA -- Huawei Technologies has premiered two new products at the ongoing ITU TELECOM WORLD 2003. It unveiled its UMTS R4 solution, consisting of a universal mobile communication core network product and a comprehensive base station portfolio. The second highlight was the launch of the global version of its U-SYS NGN solution.

Huawei has been putting great emphasis on its partnerships. The vendor has formed joint ventures with powerhouses such as 3Com, Siemens, NEC and Matsushita. During the show, Huawei is also co-operating with Qualcomm, doing a live demo of CDMA450 EV-DO at the booth. In addition, it has announced its partnership with Fibernet. The latter is using Huawei's NetEngine 40 for a nationwide network construction in the UK.

William Xu, executive vice president, Huawei Technologies, said: "Our success at ITU TELECOM WORLD 2003 shows that NGN and UMTS solutions are in high demand worldwide. Huawei is on the forefront of this technological evolution and is providing its customers with first-rate equipment for their telecom needs. Our products have been deployed in over 40 countries, including Germany, UK, France, Russia, Brazil, and Singapore."

Fibernet, the network service provide, has deployed Huawei’s transparent LAN service throughout the UK. Huawei's fifth-generation router, the Quidway NE40, will power Fibernet's national Ethernet/MPLS backbone and provide a high performance converged services platform for key business customers. The new service will provide Fibernet's customers with cost savings, when compared to more traditional legacy services like ATM and Frame Relay -- up to 80 percent according to industry analyst Ovum.

James Yang, data product director of Huawei Technologies (UK), said: "Many telecom companies have encountered problems with ASIC-based routers in the IP core layer because of their inability to provide advanced services in an effective, timely and convenient manner. Huawei's fifth-generation router, based on network processor (NP) technology, changes that, providing customers with a core router that combines guaranteed high performance and flexible service capability."
