Siemens wins breakthrough order from Delhi Metro
NEW DELHI -- Siemens AG's Transportation
Systems (TS) was recently awarded a Euro 49 million
order by Delhi Metro Rail Corp. (DMRC) to equip its
new metro line with signaling and communications systems.
This order, to be executed in partnership by Siemens
AG and Siemens Ltd., marks the group's first successful
breakthrough into India's mass transit (metro) market.
Siemens
made a breakthrough in the mass transit segment for
equipping DMRC's new 23.5-km Line 3 with an automatic
train control (ATC) system that includes signaling and
telecommunication systems. The ATC will enable trains
to operate at two-minute headways and at a maximum speed
of 80 kmph. Line 3 links Barakhamba Road in the city
center with the Dwarka section of West Delhi. While
a minor part of the route runs underground, about 95
percent is elevated. The order has a very short project
realization time of 20 months. Siemens Ltd's TS Division
will partner with Siemens AG's TS Group to execute this
project by providing locally sourced products and services,
besides doing the installation and providing support
for commissioning the system.
The
signaling system to be supplied comprises operations
control system, an electronic interlocking system, ATC
system and point machines. The order calls for the supply
of LED signals and remote-fed joint-less AF track vacancy
detection systems. All of these systems and components
are based on Siemens' proven technologies that help
provide reliable service for heavily traveled metro
networks in a number of mega cities in the Asian region.
The
telecom system consists of a 23.5-kilometer-long fiberglass
cable for voice and data transmission, a train radio
system enabling communication between the metro trains
and the operations control center, the VICOS MCS monitoring
system for escalators and communication components,
the CCTV platform surveillance system for two underground
stations, an internal telephone system, a public-address
system for individual stations and power supplies for
all the components.
The
Transportation Systems (TS) Division of Siemens Ltd.
is a leading provider of electrical systems for the
safety and traction segments for Indian Railways. The
Division's portfolio includes solutions for rail automation,
railway electrification, light and heavy rail, locomotives,
trains, turnkey projects and integrated services. It
is supported by a nation wide sales and service network
and its products are manufactured at the company's plant
at Nashik.
The
Transportation Systems Group (TS) of Siemens AG is one
of the leading suppliers to the railways industry worldwide.
As single source supplier and system integrator, TS
combines in its business segments automation and power,
rolling stock, turnkey systems and integrated services
all the expertise necessary to cover the spectrum from
signaling and control systems to traction power supplies,
as well as rolling stock for mass transit, regional
and main line services. In fiscal 2003 (ended September
30) TS generated sales of EUR 4.7 billion with a staff
of around 17,700 worldwide.
J.
Schubert, managing director, Siemens Ltd, said: "This
order is a significant breakthrough for us in the mass
urban transport market and will further strengthen our
leadership position in the signaling segment in India.
We will be providing a significant level of local value
addition to the systems being installed for DMRC and
will also assist in the efficient running of the system
in future. We are happy to participate in yet another
positive effort toward providing a sophisticated rail
infrastructure for modern Indian cities."
Andreas
Busemann, head of the Rail Automation group of Siemens
AG TS, added: "Gaining entry into India's growing
mass transit market is of tremendous importance to us.
This project will give us an opportunity to demonstrate
the unmatched quality and dependability of our systems
and components."
