Going strong with high performance, energy efficient silicon solutions for green electronics |
|
By Sabiha |

M.K. Mak
Regional Vice President of Sales for Korea and South Asia |
India is home to few of the top green electronics companies in the World and this proves that the country is ready to compete and play a leadership role in clean and green products. The awareness of Indian companies and customers about energy efficient solutions has further raised the bar.
ON Semiconductor is a premier supplier of Green Electronics solutions with a broad company portfolio of power and signal management, logic, discrete and custom devices. It helps customers efficiently solve their design challenges in automotive, communications, computing, consumer, industrial, LED lighting, medical, military/aerospace and power applications.
Convergence Plus spoke with M.K. Mak, Regional Vice President of Sales for Korea and South Asia, ON Semiconductor about the state of Green Electronics in India, on the company’s expansion plans, and on its competitive advantages.

CP: What is the vision behind the launch of voltage controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs) and its target sectors. What competitive advantage does it have?
M.K: Offering reduced costs, and ultra-low jitter and phase noise versus alternative solutions available on the market, the new NBVSBAxxx series from ON Semiconductor is ideal for providing low jitter, stable reference clock in designs such as networking, SONET, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, base stations and broadcasting equipment.
In addition to the competitive advantage in total solution cost, ON Semiconductor’s voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs) also offer high reliability due to the use of low frequency internal crystal. Besides, our 10-year experience and expertise in phase-locked loop (PLL) and differential driver abilities and design techniques enable us to offer superior, low jitter performance over competitive solutions in the market. Only ON Semiconductor’s PLLs have proven to meet and even exceed the traditional VCXO performance in the market.
CP: What is the state of Green Electronics in India?
M.K: Going green is the mantra around the globe nowadays. India is no different. Clearly we hear from our customers that they are looking for high performance, energy efficient silicon solutions. It not only raises the bars for existing power management applications but also gives birth to new market segments such as LED lighting, energy meter, smart grid, etc. We also see increasing silicon content in automotive applications to improve the fuel efficiency as well.
CP: Briefly state the increasing footprint of ON Semiconductor in the Indian market?
M.K: Leveraging our global expertise and experience, we have a broad portfolio and proven solutions, such as our GreenPoint® reference designs, readily available for our customers in India to apply in their applications while meeting global energy-efficiency regulatory requirements. We believe our key to success is to provide high performance, energy efficient silicon solutions to our customers in a time-to-market manner. Building on this strong foundation, we also work closely with customers locally in India to understand their unique requirements to ensure that our solutions are competitive for them to be successful in the marketplace.
CP: What is the road ahead? Any plans for expansion in India?
M.K: As we continue to intensify our business development in India, we are developing our local resources and capabilities both organically and through acquisitions in order to strengthen our service and support to customers here domestically. For instance, our acquisition of PulseCore brought us a very competent design team in India. Once we complete the acquisition of Sanyo Semiconductor, we will also expand our product offerings and coverage for customers in India.
