PT.TELKOM opts for Siemens' EWSD
INDONESIA -- Indonesian carrier PT.Telekomunikasi (PT.Telkom)
has awarded Siemens Information and Communication Networks
Group (ICN) an order worth around EUR 12 million for
the turnkey supply and installation of its EWSD technology.
PT.Telkom will use Siemens technology to modernize and
expand its network in Indonesia's second largest city,
Surabaya, East Java. This will reduce the number of
exchanges required, thus lowering PT.Telkom's operating
costs markedly. The network structure will be simplified
in one of the most densely populated areas of Surabaya,
Indonesia's second largest city with four million inhabitants.
The first consolidation of a network using EWSD remote
switching units (RSU) was implemented successfully in
Jakarta a year ago. Cost reductions achieved here and
increased value creation were the main prerequisite
for awarding the order for Surabaya.
The second part of the project involves increasing capacity
in the East-Java telephone network. There are cost benefits
in increasing the capacity of many existing exchanges
in Greater Surabaya, as EWSD can be expanded quickly
and cheaply due to its modular architecture without
substantial changes having to be made to the existing
basic installation.
